Perranporth Beach, in Cornwall, is famed for being the "Lego beach". The truth is more complicated. • Thanks to Tracey Williams! 📸 Lego Lost At Sea: instagram.com/legolostatsea or twitter.com/legolostatsea 📕 Her photo book ADRIFT: amzn.to/3a8glNW [aff. link]

If you were expecting a fun story about occasional Lego finds, and instead got a horrifying story about waste plastic... so was I. Tracey's photography project and book are some of the best ecological messaging I've seen in a long time! There are links in the description.

If you look at this from an outside perspective, it's no different than any other animal species leaving its fingerprints on an ecosystem. Parrotfish make white sand. Worms create silk. Cows produce methane. Humans spew out plastic waste. Nature + Plastic ≠ Death of Nature. It just means that nature changes. Nature + Plastic is the future and the planet will adapt.

I did expect this story to be a mixed bag with an eye on the big picture of plastic waste, as are all responsible videos on famous container spills such as this or the rubber duckies circling the ocean. I did not expect there to be so little Lego in this bag.

we need to go back to using hemp for fishing nets. but i wonder... if you collect up all the plastic, where... does it go? Like there's no safe way it gets disposed of where it doesn't eventually end up back in the sea or the ground, bc landfills just bury stuff. 🤔 Genuinely wondering, not meaning to be pessimistic or discouraging.

Be a good idea to comb the beach with some kind of deep digging rake team or machine every so often.

      delta250a

Perranporth was part of a study using one of those machines. But the problem is things live in the sand and the amount of wildlife that uses the tide lines for homes and feeding makes it hard to use.

5:42 “Take a bag with you…” to then throw it away, which will mean it’ll probably end up in a landfill next to the ocean and then be back on the beach? Maybe it’s not like that in the UK, but in the USA, that is sometimes the predicament. It feels rather pointless.

Damn! Went to that beach on a surfing holiday one year! I was too preoccupied with the waves! Check out the beaches in Bali though I was disgusted and amazed! Seems that Bali is in an area where so much plastic from Asia rocks up every day! I made piont of clearing it up all day long long only to go to the beach the next day and find the same amount washed up again! Biodegradable plastics need to be used! We know how to make them so "just do it" as Shia and Nike would say.

Seeing the rubbish on the beach makes me feel sick. Melbourne city council did an audit of the trash exiting the city's stormwater drains and they found 40+% was cigarette butts. Almost half of the drain bound trash is from one particular habit. Not only is smoking bad for the health of those who smoke but also of the local environment and those animals which make it home.

Takes bag of plastic away, throw in proper trash, is hauled to landfill that blows into the ocean.. We just need to collectively take a stand against wasteful plastic use. Most of this trash could easily be replaced with biodegradable products, somethings will probably always have to be plastic, start with plastic bags. Bring a reusable one to the grocer and lobby your local politicians to ban plastic bad manufacturing and import.
